The top 3 things you should do after a bicycle accident

If you're a bicyclist, you have probably seen the statistics and they are grim. California may be the most dangerous state in the country for bicyclists and Sacramento is one of the more treacherous cities.

In fact, from 2010 to 2012, almost 340 bicyclists died in accidents with motor vehicles in California, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, ranking California as the deadliest state in the country. In Sacramento alone, there were 206 bicycle accidents in 2013, based on data from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System run by the California Highway Patrol. Of those Sacramento bike accidents, one resulted in a fatality while another 15 led to serious injuries for the bicyclist involved.

If you ride frequently in Sacramento, you've probably had a close call at one point or another. A person in a parked car suddenly opens the door - a situation known as being "doored" - or a motorist turning the corner fails to notice you on your bike until the last second.

When those narrow escapes become the worst-case scenario and a bicycle accident takes place, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself.

See a doctor. Regardless of the type or severity of the injury, you will want to get it checked out by a physician as quickly as possible after the accident. Not only do you want to ensure your injuries heal properly, but you will also want the injuries documented accurately. Often, it may seem like you have suffered only a minor injury or are not injured at all, but as time passes, the seriousness of the harm done will become apparent.

Call the police and exchange information. Even if the accident seemed minor, you will want to file a police report and collect the motorist's contact information. Again, even seemingly minor accidents may end up resulting in injuries that are not immediately apparent.
