What Should I Do After a Car Accident?

|

The moments following an auto accident can be some of the most terrifying in a person's life. Understandably, many people will struggle immediately thereafter to determine what they need to do. As a result, it is a good idea to review the steps you should take after being involved in a crash before you are in such a situation.

Determine if you need to call 911

In the worst cases, there will be very little you can do after being involved in a car crash. If you are suffering from serious injuries, the most you can do is try to call 911, if you are physically able. In those cases, you need medical treatment and should not be concerned about anything else at the time.

If you are not suffering from such serious injuries, however, it is still a good idea to determine if anyone else needs medical assistance. Other motorists, passengers, bicyclists or pedestrians may be suffering from injuries that prevent them from seeking help for themselves.

Share basic information

If you are physically able, you will want to exchange information with the other people involved in the crash. Among the information you may want to consider documenting, includes:

  • Name
  • Phone number
  • Driver's license number
  • License plate number
  • Insurance information

If you are feeling too shaky to write, consider taking a picture of the individual's insurance card with your phone, to ensure you don't make any typos. In addition, refrain from apologizing for the accident while talking to the other party. You do not want to unintentionally accept fault for the crash when you may just be trying to be friendly.

Take pictures of the scene

Again, if you are not seriously injured, you can take photos of the accident scene. Most people have cameras on them at all times these days, in the form of a smartphone. In addition to taking photographs of the damage to the vehicles, also consider documenting the area around the crash, when necessary.

Hire a personal injury attorney

Following a car crash, it is very important to seek the help of a legal professional as quickly as possible. In many cases, insurance companies will attempt to settle the case before you are able to get advice from a lawyer. To ensure your rights are protected, you need to hire a lawyer after a car accident. You need someone you can trust who is dedicated to getting you the best possible result.
