4 Dangerous Substances Inside Your Home

|

You tend to think of your home as the safest place you can be. However, defective products can create risks in even the most comfortable location. Faulty appliances and harmful products can cause serious damage to your home and severe injuries to you and your family.

Getting injured in your own home can be one of the most surprising and devastating things to happen. Here are some of the most potentially dangerous substances to watch out for in your home.

1. Lead paint

Most homes built today thankfully do not contain lead paint. However, if you live in a home built before 1978, you could be at risk. When such paint starts to peel, it can release harmful particles into the air. Exposure to these particles can result in complications with the brain, kidneys, blood cells and central nervous system. It can be particularly harmful to children and babies, who may also eat flaking paint chips.

2. Cleaning products and air fresheners

The products you use to sanitize and freshen your home may be toxic. Air fresheners and sanitizing solutions sometimes contain harmful chemicals and pollutants. If you must use any of these products, make sure the area is well-ventilated and keep air circulating.

3. Carpet chemicals

Did you know there can be health problems due to indoor carpeting? Dyes and glues in carpeting can create volatile organic compounds, which are linked to health problems. The risk is especially high with carpet installation. Whenever you get new carpet installed, make sure the area is properly ventilated.

4. Phthalates

These chemicals can appear in soaps, perfumes, shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, nail polish, shower curtains, vinyl flooring and food packaging. Phthalates may cause developmental and reproductive problems.

If you have any of these products or chemicals inside your home, make sure you take the proper care around them to avoid injury.
