On motorcycle wrecks and the risks posed to motorcyclists

There are millions of motorcycles out on the road in this country, and the people who ride motorcycles are at a safety disadvantage simply due to the vehicle's design. There is not big metal frame that covers them; no airbags that protect them; no seat belts that lock them in place if an accident were to occur. As such, drivers of other vehicles need to pay attention when motorcycles are around them. If they don't, they risk getting into an accident -- and they could be at fault.

Looking at motorcycle accident data from 2013, you can see just how at-risk motorcyclists are. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,668 people were killed in motorcycle accidents in 2013. About 88,000 people were injured in motorcycle wrecks in the same year.

Though these figures represent significant declines in their respective areas compared to 2012, there is still a staggering difference in accident risk between motorcycles and other motor vehicles. The data shows that motorcyclists were 26 times more likely to die in a crash than people in other vehicles per mile driven. They were also five times more likely to be injured than people in other vehicles.

If you are involved in a motorcycle crash, you need to consider the legal ramifications of this incident. You could be in pain, and your recovery may be long and expensive. If someone acted negligently or recklessly in your specific crash, then you could be entitled to needed compensation to help you with the aftermath of the wreck.
